One weekend movie

4. American Beauty

It's difficult to explain why I like this one so much. It reminds me of The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen: depressing, postmodern, but with moments of dark humor. And very well-done. The writing is good and visually, it's arresting. The use of color, especially red, is very symbolic. As I recall, there was quite a lot to say in terms of criticism for this film, and the critics either loved it or hated it. Here are two articles with opposite opinions:
