Spur-of-the-moment 5K

There was a 5K this morning that I'd been thinking of doing all week. So we dragged ourselves out of bed and headed up to Martinsville, about 15 miles away, for the Fallen Officers Memorial 5K.

I've been feeling pretty tired and sluggish all week, and today was no exception. I was already feeling tired in the first mile of the race. Still, I was hoping I could hold onto 7:15 pace, which was my goal. First mile was 7:01, too fast. Second mile was 7:29, ugh. I tried to ignore my heavy legs and concentrate on speeding up for the last mile. Managed to squeak in at 22:29 (7:59 for the last 1.1), so I was able to average 7:15s after all. Yay!

My post-college PR is my 22:05 split from that most likely short 8K last December, but I'm pleased with this because I know it was an accurately measured course...and I'm getting closer to that lifetime PR! Only 1:19 to go. I'm hoping this summer to bring the gap to under a minute in an open race whose accuracy I can trust...we'll see. Right now, the marathon is my priority.

I did an extended cooldown to bring my total for week one of the taper to 45.7 and then collected an award for first in my age group. In fact, I was the only one in my age group. :) But I was also third female overall, so I did pretty well. And my time predicts a 3:39 marathon...wink wink, nudge nudge. My 5Ks are worse than useless for longer distance predictions, though. Shut up, Mir! :) Two weeks to Sunburst!!!

A little bit of nice speedwork enroute to your marathon. Good work. Good luck on 5/31, you sound really ready.

Hey, Miranda, just found your Blog!! I'm in West Lafayette and am also running Sunburst (though the half, not the full).

Great speed work...nice to catch that little 5K race!
